I wondered what a 10K would feel like...

As part of the applying to BMSW, I knew that I had to agree to train for the 10K. I ran a 5K once. Just once. I loved the feeling of accomplishment, and then it got colder and colder as it does in Indiana and I quit training, got lazy and didn't start running again until mid - July. I am new to running I started training with Ron last year and I wish I would of picked it up when I was younger. I guess waiting until I was 45 to start makes me appreciate it more.

I have been working up to longer walk/runs for a couple of weeks now and was determined to figure out what a 10K feels like at this point of training. Would my legs hold out, could I sustain a pace so that I can finish strong, etc? So this morning I kind of pushed myself into going longer until I hit 6.5 miles. I live near Carroll High School so according to Runtastic I can do the loop around CHS and it measures about 1.2 miles. I ran a lap, walked a lap and then did that two more times for a total for 6 laps.

I took it really slow and easy and was surprised by these things.

1. My walk and jog are at the same pace. :) This makes me laugh and cry because I have this visual of being passed by walkers at the race. My pace is about as fast as a herd of turtles wading through molasses. :) at least that is what it feels like to me.

2. My heart and lungs did not explode - thank you Rick for assuring us this would not happen.

3. I can exercise for 2 hours. It took me 1:56 minutes to complete. I can do a 10K in under 2 hours. I hope they don't close the course.

4. I'm starting to feel like an athlete. That also makes me smile, because that was a foreign concept to me growing up.

I can do this. We can do this!

  1. Just read this out loud in the car to Frank, my voice broke, I teared up thru the...I feel like an athlete.
I am so proud of you!
You are correct at that pace you will get passed by walkers...and that's okay!
I know you have a good pride and relief that you have a 6.2 mile distance under your belt now. Celebrate!

  2. Wait until you do the actual race. The feeling will be even greater then. Your energy will grow in you and you will probably do even better than you think you can. I remember the feeling when I finished the 10K at Fort4Fitness. I surpassed my earlier attempts but more important to me was I was able to say I did it and accomplished something I never thought I would do. You are going to have a great day to celebrate and remember when you run that 10K.
