Tonight I tried my very first spin class ever. If you would've asked me a couple months ago to do spin class, I probably would have laughed. I hated going to the gym at all. If I could go and be invisible while I work out, that would probably be just fine with me. Now, I am taking part in a fairly public weight loss program. Not only is my weight public information, there are group workouts with photos, and a blog. And I can't believe I'm doing this. And the point isn't that I am comfortable or confident with it all yet, but that I am able still to do it even though I feel super awkward a lot of the time. The old me would've been too embarrassed to try to spin class. I wasn't able to do everything tonight and I'm definitely not very good at it yet. But I can safely say that I will try it again. I think the more I get out of my comfort zone, the more I will learn to be confident in what I can do.
Look at me, I'm growing...but also shrinking.
That was very courageous! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat you said fits to my situation perfectly as well! Keep up your good work!
ReplyDeleteSpin classes are no joke. It doesn't matter how fit you are, your first few are going to be awkward. Heck, Rick and EJ would feel the same way if they were in that class with you (I say this because I don't think either of them regularly do spin classes).
ReplyDeleteWhich instructor did you have? Spiece spin class instructors are top-notch cool, and each one is a little different.
I can't remember her name but she was awesome. She definitely took the time to help get me set up. I thought I would be dying or watching the clock, but she really made it fun and the class went really fast.
ReplyDeleteIt could have been Hannah or Roxy or Mari or Lisa, or any of the other teachers and you would have had the same answer!
ReplyDeleteI think I have been told maybe 3 classes under your belt to feel comfortable..1 down!
You know it might be fun to have everyone yell a random word like BUBBLEGUM every time any of us is doing something we feel awkward doing....I bet we would hear the word constantly from most or all of us!!
There are definitely drawbacks to your journey being so public....but the advantages are huge! 2 come to mind-
Accountability,
And more people know more about your journey = more people to encourage and pray for you!
I know getting out of my comfort zone is both scary, and sometimes empowering.
Meghan how much you describe me last year. I remember my first attempts at the spin class and wonder why I was trying it. After the program I ended up becoming a regular member of Mari's 5:15 AM spin class. I sort of miss those times in there and the challenges it gave me. Doing these things are great victories telling the enemy in us to shut up we are going to take back our lives. Keep up the fight.
